I was especially thrilled to see that this set of products included familiar skincare ingredients that I love using on my face. What I miss in haircare, I more than make up for in my skincare game, and seeing ingredients like amino acids, lactic acid, tartaric acid, and centella asiatica immediately caught my eye. According to Ginger King, a cosmetic chemist from New Jersey, these acids are especially important for colored hair. “Amino acids help replenish and repair damage to hair porosity,” says King. “Lactic acid has a low pH which helps shrink and seal the cuticle.” When it comes to centella asiatica, a popular K-Beauty skincare ingredient you may know better as cica, King notes that its antioxidant properties help protect damaged hair and discoloration from stress factors. environmental stresses, such as sun damage or regular washing.
Here are the products that I chose to try among the Kérastase Chroma Absolute Collectionand how they worked together to preserve my color and strengthen my locks.
According to King, the simple act of washing your hair causes 80% of color fading, so choosing the right product in the shower is essential. Bain Chroma Respect shampoo was the first thing I washed with after my last dye job, and I’m so glad I did. The creamy texture felt luxurious and my hair felt so soft, even after drying.
But the real test was how much dye I would see in the tub after rinsing. For those who don’t know you are always going to get a ton of color streaking in the first wash but I was amazed at how little came out after my first three washes which is where I usually see the greatest loss of color. Nop attributes this to its sulfate-free formula. Sulfates, according to Nop, are a known color killer that can also be extremely drying. Since I do very little styling, the color and condition of my hair are my top priorities, so I appreciate that the Kérastase collection takes care of both.
The Chroma Absolu line comes with a great everyday conditioner, but I was especially looking forward to treating my freshly colored hair, especially my ends, with some extra moisture after first dyeing it. Now that I’ve made it part of my routine, I like to indulge in the Chroma Filler mask once a week, which helps ensure my locks stay extra-smooth and the color continues to look as shiny as possible. .
During my last color touch-up with Nop, she shared her top beauty tip: “Treat your haircare like your skincare.” For me, that translates to adding a few extra at-home steps to my routine that I would normally get at the salon, like a shine treatment.
