With the vaccine rolling out, many of us are seeing friends, family and colleagues for the first time in a year and a half. Determined to burn their sweatpants and emerge with a whole new look, many are looking to replace their wardrobes, get their hair cut, or try on some bold new makeup. One thing you shouldn’t forget: the smell. To me, a new scent can seem transformational, a subtle way of announcing a new identity to the world. Here are a few our writers love.

Dark is Night by Henry Rose
On a chilly summer night, editor-in-chief Amy Farley adores Dark Is Night, a scent from one of our favorite fragrance houses, Michelle Pfeiffer’s clean Henry Rose fragrance line. “When it first comes out of the bottle, it’s a woody, decadent blend of vanilla,” says Farley, adding that it clears up to a sweet, airy scent after a few minutes. Henry Rose’s latest scent, Windows Down is also perfect for a summer day, with notes of grapefruit, bergamot and Earl Gray tea drying out into a subtle, fruity scent.

Pure Clémentine California Perfume by Atelier Cologne
For a light, lemony summer scent to wear in hot weather, Fast business Artistic Director Chelsea Schiff loves Clémentine California Pure Perfume from French fragrance company Atelier Cologne. “Every once in a while you wake up to a cloudy day and it just makes you feel, for lack of a better word, blah. That’s when I’m looking for that scent, ”she says, adding that the scent of clementine reminds her of Vespa rides along the Italian coast.

Ghost of Mojave by Byredo
Those who are easily overwhelmed by a strong scent may love the subtle Mojave Ghost from Stockholm luxury brand Byredo. The sophisticated woody and floral scent smells like you have just stepped out of a very chic shower. Plus, the chic, minimalist (and expensive) bottle looks great on a vanity.

Jimmy Choo Eau de Toilette
When the social media producer (and my Hit the ground while running Podcast co-host) Christina Royster wants to feel luxurious, she turns to Jimmy Choo’s signature floral scent. “I wear it on date nights or on days when I need a boost of confidence. I only need a few pulse point sprays for this scent to have an impact, ”she says.

Tom Ford’s Lost Cherry
Recommendation writer Rachel Raczka loves the sweet, sultry and irresistible high of Tom Ford’s Lost Cherry, a warm and spicy scent that smells of cherry, almond and vanilla. A bonus? The hold of the perfume. “A light spray of this on the back of my neck and in my belly button lasts all day,” she says.

Functional fragrance by Nue Co
Nue Co’s Functional Scent is designed to do more than just make you smell good – the brand says the blend of clean, woody and spicy scents can help de-stress the mind. Developed with perfumer Frank Voelkl, one of the noses behind Le Labo’s iconic Santal 33, the subtle fragrance incorporates notes of iris, palo santo and green cardamom.

Replica Sailing Day by Maison Margiela
Editor-in-chief Lara Sorokanich became obsessed with finding a new signature scent this summer and turned to a sample set for help. Maison Margiela’s $ 35 Discovery Box contains 10 intriguing and unusual fragrance samples from the company that smell like everything from spring in the park at hair salons at old libraries. “To my surprise, unisex Sailing day is my absolute favorite: to me it smells like a cool ocean breeze on a hot summer day, cool and bright and full of promise. That is to say, it looks exactly like summer 2021, ”she says.
