“Translucent brown” is the latest hair color trend of 2022.
The trend is to add subtle hints of lighter color to brunette hair and is ideal for the transition from winter to spring.
An editor tried the “translucent brown” hair color and loved the end results.
I’ve been a brunette my whole life except for a few weeks in high school where I had an unfortunate encounter with a bottle of bleach and an inexperienced colorist (aka my best friend). Since this experience, I hesitated to dye my hair lighter, except for the very occasional and very minimal highlight. Over the past few months, I’ve toyed with the idea of adding more variety to my look, but I was afraid to commit to anything too drastic. So when I heard about a new hair color trend, “translucent brown,” which promised dimension and subtle color without overdoing it, my curiosity was immediately piqued.
Unlike the “expensive brunette” hair color trend, which is more of a rich, deeper brunette with dimension in varying shades of brown, translucent brunette is a dimensional brown with subtle hints of lighter parts throughout. “With translucent brown, there’s a soft kiss of color that provides the ability to go lighter in the summer and darker in the winter – without committing to that ‘expensive brunette,'” said Sunnie Brook, Global Ambassador of Biolage and celebrity stylist, at POPSUGAR.
“Imagine you have curtains in your house, thick chocolate velvet curtains – that’s an expensive brunette,” says Brooks. “Brown linen curtains, with the light streaming through them, are softer, with less pigment saturation. They can read high and low in the light instead of having really vibrant colors like you would brown Dear.”
Over the past three years I’ve given my hair a break from any color and had frequent trims. My hair is honestly healthier than it has been in a while, and it has fully regained its natural color, as all the old highlights have completely grown out and been cut.
What appealed to me the most about the translucent brown trend was that it was a subtle refresh, rather than something too over the top. Although I’ve been really into my natural color lately, with the warmer months coming up, I was looking for a way to add some lighter parts without experiencing any dramatic hair changes. In order to add dimension to my hair while maintaining a natural look, I visited Tylor Johnson, colorist and founder of Nous Haircare, to help me achieve my translucent brown goals.
To get the look, Johnson started hand painting focal highlights around my face and all the way down to give my hair a sun-kissed look that’s normally only achieved after a relaxing vacation in the sun (or hours at the hair salon). Johnson also masked my root to be about a half shade lighter than my natural color, but she made sure my hair retained rich golden tones and she avoided anything too brassy or red. Then, to finish my look, Johnson used That’s Rich from Nous Haircare ($50), a gloss formulated to refresh brunette hair and restore richness to the color.
Since I’m not the type of person who likes to spend hours at the hair salon, I was curious about the upkeep of the color, but Johnson assured me it was very low maintenance. “You could probably go up to six months without doing your highlights…it’s supposed to be pretty minimal. If you have an event you can always come in for a face frame, but I’d say it’s brilliant every time you feel like it. starts to clear up.”
I left the salon with a perfectly sun-kissed look and hair that said “translucent brown.” The color was subtle and certainly not overdone. It added a dimension to my hair that I didn’t have before, and it gave my look a little something extra. Something.
