Buy makeup for £ 1, dye your hair for £ 6 and rent the parade

GEMMA Bird barely has a quirky hairstyle, her makeup is impeccable, and her wardrobe looks straight out of the pages of Vogue.

But she keeps abreast of the latest fashion and beauty trends on a very tight budget – and, in the third in her exclusive six-part series to save money with Fabulous, reveals how YOU can too.

Rent the track

Most of us can’t afford to buy designer clothes, but that doesn’t mean you can’t wear them – just rent them instead.

Websites like My Wardrobe HQ, Girl Meets Dress, and Hurr are great for picking out a very special outfit if you have a big event coming up.

For example, on My Wardrobe HQ you can borrow a £ 1,500 YSL suit for just £ 25 for the day.

Most of the time, thanks to social media, once you have a photo in an outfit, you won’t want to wear it anyway, so that also helps to avoid waste.

And it works both ways – if you have a lot of designer clothes, you can also use the website to rent your parts and earn some extra cash.

When it comes to a big event, Gemma recommends renting an outfit rather than buying one.

Never pay full price for designer gear

If you want to treat yourself, there is nothing wrong with that, but make sure you get a good deal.

I always go to Bicester Village in Oxfordshire if I’m looking for a designer piece. A few years ago I bought a Gucci bag for £ 500, instead of £ 1500.

There are plenty of branded villages across the UK such as Braintree Village and Cheshire Oaks, so be sure to check them out before you shell out for an upscale piece.

While I may have a few designer pieces, I always mix them up with Primark jeans and an H&M top and a Boohoo jacket – this expensive piece will elevate the look.

Track down designer dupes

I love fashion but I don’t have an endless amount of money so I’m an expert at spotting designer dupes.

For example, at the moment Primark is full of Gucci and YSL shoulder bags, as well as Michael Kors handbags.

Likewise, I found an exact match of Valentino studded heels in the cheap shoe store Linzi Shoes in Lakeside Mall, they are easy to find, you just need to do your research.

I will also be researching websites for designer matches.

Recently I fell in love with this gorgeous satin shirt from YSL which cost £ 340 so I went to Boohoo and searched for ‘satin shirt’ until I found one quite similar for just £ 13.50.

It means I can look like these high fashion girls without the hefty price tag.

Spend money on your foundation – not your makeup

I never spend more than £ 20 a month on maintaining my beauty – all in all, whether it’s my hair or my nails, I like to keep the costs down.

I’ll spend around £ 30 on my favorite foundation, Double Wear by Estée Lauder, twice a year, but I only need to apply it once a day, so in the long run it’s cheaper.

Because I have an expensive base, I will choose cheaper pieces for the rest of my makeup bag.

My favorite lipstick is Revolution’s Chauffeur, which is a dupe of Pillow Talk by Charlotte Tilbury, and costs me € 5 instead of £ 25.

My blush and bronzers are from Poundland and because I have an expensive foundation as a base it contains the cheap powder and I will buy my mascara depending on where it is offered – they are all the same to me.

Adopt DIY treatments

It’s really important for me to take care of my skin and I try to commit to one facial a week, but there’s no way I’m paying the price for the spa.

Instead, I head over to Boots or Superdrug and grab a tube of a mud mask for about a tenner and I can get ten masks out of them, meaning they cost me £ 1 each.

And I always make sure to use the last drop before buying a new one so nothing is wasted.

I color and style my own hair, I just buy a Nice’n Easy dye and do it myself at home every few months which costs around £ 6 whereas getting it professionally dyed would cost me hundreds .

Although I can’t do my own acrylic nails myself, I won’t pay the salon price for the color, so when I visit the nail shop I only ask them for the acrylic fillings and then paint them. myself when I get home which saves me £ 10 a time.

Refuel while deals are running

I have a few flagship products that I can’t live without, like Olay Lift and Firm Serum, but it can be quite expensive.

Boots last week was offering a half-price buy on Olay, so I bought four, and they’ll last me about a year at a fraction of the cost.

The same goes for my eyelashes, I take them for a five on eBay and you get five sets which is a good deal if you consider that a set of Eyelure will set you back £ 5.

Order from abroad for cheaper products

One of my favorite sites is All Beauty, which is based in Guernsey, which means you save money on taxes as it’s imported making the products cheaper.

I always get all of my designer fragrances from All Beauty because it’s the cheapest I’ve ever found.

Repair do not replace

If you have ghd hair straighteners and they break, don’t throw them away and spend hundreds of dollars to replace them.

Instead, visit ghdrepairs.co.uk where you can get your stylers repaired for £ 25 including delivery, which is a fraction of the cost you would pay for new ones.

Get an in-home hairdresser

I hardly ever go to the hairdresser, and that’s because my hairstyles only cost me £ 12 a pop.

I have an in-home hairdresser, and overall they will charge you a lot less than what you would have charged in salons.

My hairdresser is a friend of a friend, so ask around, you might find a discount beautician at your doorstep.
