This year, spicing up your hair hue is easier than you think, thanks to the plethora of inspiration seen on the runways, social media and A-list celebrities. Ashley Streicher, hairstylist and owner of Striiike salon in Los Angeles, thinks fall is the perfect time to add some depth to your hair color. “People are willing to tone down their summer highlights to make things richer,” the pro shares. Popular shades fall into two categories this fall: modern updates to your natural tone and bold, dramatic pops of color. That means everything from mushroom blonde to copper red is up for grabs.
Ready to blow it out of the water this season with your hair color? Ahead, four celebrity hairstylists and colorists take a look at the hottest trends of the moment. Maple Leaf Highlights
Dallas-based natural hair specialist Quia Querisma recommends taking inspiration from nature with this combination of golden, orange, brown and red hair shades. “These color trends are flattering for all hair types, from straight to kinky, and most skin tones can wear them,” the expert told TZR. “To care for your color-treated hair, opt for salon-quality shampoo, conditioner, and styling products.” Her suggestion: The entire Pureology brand was designed with color care in mind, Color Fanatic Multi-Task Deep Conditioning Mask and Color Fanatic Multi-Task Leave-In Spray to hydrate and repair hair while protecting color .
Red Frenzy
Jamie Mazzei, creative director of NuBest Salon & Spa in Manhasset, New York, considers shades of red a hot color trend for fall. “If you have a fair complexion, try a strawberry blonde or a light copper,” the pro told TZR. “For slightly matte skin, opt for copper or coral. And for darker skin tones, you can opt for shades of purple and burgundy.
Caramel Swirls
Mazzei recommends Caramel, a creamy brown with sunny golden highlights, for its ability to complement any skin tone, and it’s super customizable. As for maintenance tips, Lorena M. Valdes, colorist at Maxine Salon in Chicago, encourages less washing and a hair mask at least twice a month to lock in moisture and help maintain your lighter tones.
dark mocha
Dark mocha, the darkest brown you can choose before turning black, is one of the most popular colors you’ll see this fall according to Shvonne Perkins, lead educator at Madison Reed. Perkins recommends following up with a gloss or toner when visiting a salon or with Madison Reed Color Reviving Gloss Espresso at home to keep color looking fresh.
shaded roots
Goodbye shadowed, hello shadowed roots. “Instead of highlights from root to end, this trend is all about creating a deeper base with lighter mid-lengths for a more shaded root, giving the illusion of big, full hair,” Perkins told TZR. It’s also a great trend for those who don’t have time for regular touch-ups, because imperfection is the name of the game. To maintain your roots between salon visits, use Madison Reed Root Perfection to blend perfectly with your color.
muted copper
According to famed colorist Matt Rez, muted copper, which has a brick-colored background with golden copper highlights, will be everywhere this fall. The color is perfect for those with more olive skin tones, as the warm brown base will complement skin undertones. “Adjust the level of this hair color to your eye color – lean more towards the brown end of this color trend and have muted copper highlights woven into your base brown color if you have more dark,” he added.
Modern Mushroom Blonde
Streicher sees a high mushroom blonde asking for fall where there are cooler, earthy tones enhanced by light brown highlights. “The best way to keep colors vibrant and rich is to make sure you use good products that are safe for natural colors,” the expert says while discussing maintenance. Her go-to product is Vegamour ENSO 02 Shampoo and Conditioner for its ability to provide moisture and color protection.
deep plum
As we progress into fall, Perkins even predicts more vibrant purple and red hues mixing with deep red brunettes to create a cherry cola look – mahogany tones that fall between the red and purple. “One way to try this trend is to add a pop of red to brunette hair with a temporary mask like Madison Reed Color Therapy Mask Rubino,” the expert told TZR. “You’ll see that the depth of the brunette stays the same, but the red sheen shows through in the light.”
Champagne Blonde
Champagne blonde has been trending for a few seasons now, but this fall it’s moving away from its lighter shades and instead sporting a medium to dark blonde base with swirling golden tones. eyes and skin and are flattering with so many tones,” says Perkins.
