3 tips for coloring two-tone hair, straight from professional colorists

There really is a shade for everyone – and every #mood – when it comes to this year’s most popular hair color trends. If you’re unsure whether you prefer a sweet cotton candy a la Demi Lovato or maybe an ethereal mermaid blue like Hilary Duff, why not do both? Two-tone hair has been around for a while, but with stars like Bella Hadid, Kehlani, and Sha’Carri Richardson recently sporting locks in two different shades, dual-dye jobs are clearly having a time.

“This technique is a great way to try two different colors at the same time”, Guy Tang, celebrity colourist and #Mydentity founder, says Bustle. “It’s perfect for these customers [who] don’t know what color to choose.

Tang adds that he likes to combine bright colors and pastels especially because they are “fun and playful together”. Pink and lavender are her favorite products at the moment, because the colors together form a “magic combination”. For Challenger Jaxcee, co-founder of The Coily collective and colourist of stars like Jill Scott and Amanda Seales, it’s about mixing neutrals. “Personally, I like neutral brown tones with neutral blonde tones,” she tells Bustle. “The high contrast gives it a bold look, while the neutral tones are a nod to what’s going on in fashion right now.”

Like the many color combinations you can play with, there are also a * ton * of different ways to color two-tone hair. Tang’s preferred strategy is to place one shade under the other. “I love the way the colors blend into each other, especially when highlighted around the face,” he says. Challenger, meanwhile, appreciates a peekaboo approach more (think Richardson’s deeply cool blue): occipital bone in the crown area and placing the lightest color in that section of hair, ”she says. Of course, you can still go 50/50 for a Cruella-like impact. To flaunt a two-tone look – and you absoutely want to show it off – go for a half up braid or a fun twist, suggests Tang. Ponytails are also a great way to maximize the effect, Challenger adds.

Whatever you do, it’s essential to treat your dyed strands with a little extra TLC so that the darker color doesn’t spill over into the lighter color, Challenger warns. She recommends “washing the darker part first while keeping the lighter side safe and sheltered” and emphasizes Bumble and bumble Color Minded Shampoo as a great color-safe wash. Another tip: While hair dyeing might be totally fine for DIY, you’ll want to leave this one to the experts. “You don’t want to end up with a paranormal hairstyle at home,” says Tang.
